                                                  Scale Requirements

                                                  Clarifications on Audition Repertoire:

Timpanists must prepare the solo (Roll Off by Fred Hinger) on TWO DRUMS (middle drums) as written. Students will not be permitted to use additional drums to perform the solo.

The Eb Clarinet Solo (Rose Etudes) has been released in a new edition, but the etudes are identical, so either edition may be used.

Clarinet: The following update has been developed by the chair with input from the clarinet repertoire committee and reflects an effort to balance the musical requirements of the solo with the procedural/objective requirements of the audition process. Language in quotation marks below is taken directly from our audition scoring guides.

                                                  1) The entire solo must be prepared for the audition, with the exception of any “ossia” measures, which will not be used, as these measures do not appear in all printings of the edition.

                                                  2) The first page may be played expressively, but must NOT be performed as a cadenza. The solo may be interpreted such that the “performance demonstrates full control of tempo, dynamics, phrasing, and expression in a dramatic performance consistent with the style of the solo,” but the rhythms must be clear enough so that they are “accurate and precise throughout the performance.”

                                                  3) The printed tempo discrepancy in the 3/8 section must be left to the musical judgment of the teacher and performer. The range of printed tempi is between 8th note=63 bpm and 16th note=63 bpm. While this is indeed a wide range, good musical judgment must prevail. All interpretations should adhere to the language in the scoring guide, “performance demonstrates full control of tempo, dynamics, phrasing, and expression in a dramatic performance consistent with the style of the solo.”

It is the suggestion of both the committee and the chair that students preparing the solo seek out several recordings of this work in an effort to develop the interpretation that suits their playing most effectively; many examples are available through publicly accessible internet sources.”
